Equipment -

When filming my indie rock music video, I am going to use a selection of equipment to make my footage appear both realistic and professional. To make my band members appear as if they are in a real band and are actually playing and singing my chosen song, I am going to use a variety of different instruments in order to portray this fact on screen.

Below is a list of the equipment which I am going to use within my indie rock music video -

- Microphones
- Speakers
- Electric guitar
- Bass guitar
- Drum kit
- Camera/video recorder
- Tripod

Inspirational Director -

After searching for an inspirational director for a vast amount of time, I finally discovered Aaron Brown, who works for a music and art company named 'Focus Creeps.'
Whilst researching further into Brown and Focus Creeps, I discovered a number of aspects which attracted me to both the company and the director. Firstly, Aaron Brown and Focus Creeps have worked with The Arctic Monkeys on a number of occasions, producing music videos such as 'R U Mine?' and 'One For The Road.' This particular factor attracted me to both the director and the company, as The Arctic Monkeys are the main band which I am attempting to emulate whilst designing and styling both my models and my music video. Therefore, by using a director who has worked with the band who is my main focus, I am hoping to discover a number of techniques which will allow me to create a realistic music video which will match my band and song perfectly.

The second reason as to why I chose this particular director and company is due to the fact that their music videos are commonly filmed in black and white. This particular factor attracted me to both the director and the company, as this is a technique which I hoping to emulate whilst filming and editing my music video. From watching a number of Arctic Monkeys music videos which are filmed by Brown/Focus Creeps, I have discovered that the black and white effect matches both the artist and the song extremely well, and allows the music video to be unique and extremely interesting. This is a technique which I m hoping to use, to make my music video appear unique and interesting also.

Another factor which attracted me to this particular director and company was their use of a particular narrative technique which is used in certain videos. From the videos I have watched (directed by Brown/Focus Creeps) I have discovered that the Amplification technique is used. this particular factor attracted me to both the director and the company as the Amplification technique is something which I am opting to use within my music video. After watching a variety of music videos directed and filmed by Focus Creeps, I have discovered that the Amplification technique works perfectly with the genre, the artist and the song, allowing the video to appear extremely professional, once again, this is something which I am hoping to use in order to make my music video appear extremely realistic and professional.

Below are some examples of Arctic Monkeys music videos, directed by Aaron brown/Focus Creeps -

Representations -

When filming my music video I hoping to portray a variety of aspects to make the video interesting and enjoyable for the audience to watch. The main focus of my music video is going to be my fictitious band, The Rituals. I want to make the band the key feature of the video, as this is a technique which is commonly used in indie music videos. However, to add interest to my video, I am going to use a variety of different settings and editing techniques to make my video appear professional, realistic and extremely interesting. Also, as I have chosen the narrative element 'Amplification' I am hoping to subtly portray various lyrics or meanings throughout the video, to allow the reader to connote what the song is actually about, but without being too obvious. This particular technique or element is also another feature which commonly appears within indie rock music videos. By using this technique, I am hoping to emulate existing indie rock music videos, and create an authentic, extremely professional indie rock music video.

By using all of the factors listed above in my music video, I am hoping that my audience will find my video interesting, intriguing and very entertaining to watch. If all of the factors listed above are carried out, then the music video will become extremely unique, distinctive and popular with the audience, as will the song.

Narrative Element -

After much consideration, I have finally chosen a specific narrative element which I will use throughout my music video. The narrative element I have chosen is known as 'Amplification.'

I opted to choose this particular narrative element as I feel as if it suits my directing style, my genre of music videos (as a large number of indie rock videos I have analysed use amplification as the narrative element) as well as my song choice.

By using the Amplification narrative element I am hoping to create a video which matches certain lyrics, but does not give away the songs meaning through the visuals. I am hoping that by using the amplification element, I can create a music video which is slightly mysterious, intriguing and interesting to watch, to keep the audience hooked for the entirety of the song/video.

Also, by choosing this particular narrative element, I have allowed myself a certain amount of creativity which I am hoping to use whilst filming my music video. Due to the fact that my visuals do not have to totally match the lyrics, I am hoping to use a variety of different techniques and settings to make my music video interesting for the audience to watch.

Digipak Inspiration -

Below are a collection of album covers from a variety of bands from the indie rock genre. I have opted to post these particular album covers, as in my opinion they are interesting, simple and eye catching. Although many of the album covers below are black and white, they still possess the power to stand out on the shelf, due to their iconic images and eye catching features. In my opinion, the simplicity holds the key to success, as the audience is able to memorize the image featuring on the cover itself. If an album cover is overly complicated, then it will not be memorable and will be overlooked by the audience. Whilst designing my album/digipak, i am hoping to emulate some of the techniques which feature on the existing album covers below, to ensure that my digipak is eye catching, realistic and professional.

Reflection -

In the past week, i have produced a variety of posts which clearly portray my ideas for my music video. Some of the posts which currently feature on my blog are the 25 word pitch, a 30 second video which clearly explains my ideas. I have also uploaded images of my chosen filming location, my fictitious bands name, members, background and twitter account, as well as my audience research and my who my target audience is. Within the next week, i am hoping to research into music video directors, to ensure i have a particular style to emulate whilst designing my storyboard and then filming the video itself. I am also hoping to analyse the lyrics to my chosen song, post images of my favourite camera shots/angles, and explain the representations which i hope to portray in my music video.

Band Clothing -

In order to make my fictitious band appear like a real indie rock band i am going to attempt to emulate the clothing styles of real indie rock bands such as The Arctic Monkeys, Kasabian and Beady Eye. The types of clothing i am going to style my band members in are leather jacket's, shirts, t-shirts, skinny jeans,  blazers, denim Jackets, jewelry e.g. chains, wrist bands etc, sunglasses and anoraks.

I want to style my band in clothing commonly associated with indie/alternative rock to add authenticity to both my band and my video. In my opinion, the band needs to look the part in order for the video to work. By styling my band in clothing such as leather jackets and sunglasses etc. the audience is able to connote the fact that the band they are about to watch are from the indie rock genre. I would also like members of my band to be eye catching and unique, so that they can stand out in the musical world and become a huge presence in the indie rock scene, similarly to the likes of The Arctic Monkeys, for example, lead singer Alex Turner is extremely recogniseable due to his fashion sense (smart suits, leather jackets etc.) as well as his hair style. This is a technique which i am hoping to emulate whilst styling my lead singer. I am hoping to make lead singer Welch into an iconic figure, not just in the band, but in the indie rock genre and entire musical world.

By choosing clothing which matches both the song and the setting, i am hoping that the overall effect of the music video will be extremely authentic, original and professional, just how a real music video should be.

Below are a collection of images of The Arctic Monkeys, Kasabian and Beady Eye, the three bands who i am attempting to emulate whilst styling my indie rock band.

Filming Locations -

After searching for a location for a number of weeks, i have finally found the ideal location for my music video to be filmed. The chosen venue is a lock up/band practice room on Yeoman Street, central Leicester.

An outside view of my chosen filming location, taken from Google maps. This particular photo also features the address of the location.

There are a variety of reasons as to why i chose this particular location.

Here is an image of lead singer Dean Welch, recording inside the studio.
Firstly, the location is perfect, as the room itself matches the indie/alternative genre excellently. This particular factor, along with the bands choice of clothing is what will allow them to appear as a real indie rock band, which is what i am aiming to portray in my music video. Another factor which attracted me to this particular venue is where it is situated. My chosen venue is situated in the middle of central Leicester, and so will allow me to add a variety of different shots and settings into the music video. This urban setting may also match the lyrics and bring both the song and the video to life. Another reason as to why this location is perfect is the fact that it is on the same road as indie rock music venue 'The Shed.' This particular feature could be incorporated into my music video, giving my band and music video a boost of authenticity.

The second reason as to why i chose this particular location is due to the fact that the lock up is used by a real band. Dean Welch, my friend and lead singer of my fictitious band, uses this particular venue on regular basis, and writes and performs song with other members of his band. This particular factor attracted me to the venue, as this portrays the authenticity of the location, and will hopefully create an authenticity to both my band and my music video.

The third reason as to why i chose this location is due to the fact that all the necessary equipment is already there. As mentioned before, this particular venue is used by a real band on a regular basis, and so equipment such as guitars, microphones, drums and speakers are constantly stored inside, making the job of organisation a lot easier.

The fourth and most important feature witch attracted me to this particular venue is the price. As this setting is used on a regular basis by my friends, i will be able to film my music video inside the lock up free of charge. When i discovered this factor, i was thrilled, as i have discovered that some of my fellow class members will have to both hire out and pay for their venues, which i would have found somewhat difficult to do.

A birds eye view of Leicester. The red arrow indicates the exact location of my venue.

Here is a mid-shot of the studio. This particular photo portrays
the rooms size and alternative appearance.

Audience Research -

In order to discover what type of audience was best suited to my genre of music magazine i decided to use Channel 4's 'UK tribes.' After surfing the site for quiet some time i finally found a suitable group, this particular group are known as the 'indie scenesters.'

Information on Indie Scenesters  taken from UK Tribes

The scenesters are the ones which are best suited to the style of music video i am hoping to produce for a number of reasons. Firstly, the scenesters are in love with music. Old, current and upcoming music is guaranteed to be on the iPod of an indie scenester, showing that they are open and willing to indulge in various types of music. Not only do they listen, but they search as well. Yes, an indie scenester is never content with listening to the same tracks over and over again. The scenesters are renowned for searching for and finding new music which they then give to the world. Thanks to the indie scenesters many new and upcoming bands have become big in the public eye and some have even turned into highly successful artists, which is what i want my fictitious band to be - well loved by their target audience. Some may describe the indie scenesters as 'trend setters' as their fashion and music appeal is highly acclaimed by many

In my opinion, these particular factors make the Indie scenesters the ideal tribe or audience for my music video, as i am hoping to produce an indie rock band who are fashionable, trend setters and are extremely interesting and popular with the target audience.

The Band -

The Rituals

Background -
The Rituals are an English Indie Rock band formed in 2010 in Woodhouse, a suburb of Leeds. The band consists of Dean Welch (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Harry Julian (lead guitar, backing vocals), Angus Cox (bass guitar) and Harry Lunn (drums)

In August 2010, school mates Dean Welch and Harry Julian began their musical careers. After realizing that they both had extremely similar tastes in music, the two opted to start writing and performing their own indie rock songs. After months of busking on the streets of Leeds, the duo were offered a spot to perform alongside some of the cities best new and upcoming artists. Although their debut gigs were good, both Welch and Julian felt that a change was needed, to ensure that their presence in the world of music was known.

In March the following year, the duo doubled, and The Rituals were born. The band opted to name the band after the literal meaning of the word 'ritual' which translates as 'a sequence of activities involving gestures, words and objects, performed in a particular place, and performed according to set sequence.' With the addition of bass guitarist Angus Cox and drummer Harry Lunn, Welch and Julian were ready to take the bars and clubs of Leeds by storm, and light up the lives of spectators with their modern indie swagger.

After performing at some of Leeds' best known venues, The Rituals were fast becoming the most popular up and coming band in the whole of Yorkshire, and were offered a slot to support fellow indie rock band The Courteeners on tour in late 2012. After performing in front of thousands up and down the country, the band decided that the time was right to begin producing their debut album.

Musical Style -
The Rituals musical style is indie rock. In an exclusive interview with NME, lead singer Welch cited the following artists as the bands main inspiration. "Who are we influenced by? some of the greatest artists ever to grace a musical stage. Oasis, The Arctic Monkeys, Ian Brown, you get the picture.."

Other Influences -
The Courteeners, The Strokes, Beady Eye, Jake Bugg, The Smiths.
By listening to The Rituals, it is clear to see where they draw their musical inspiration from. Although their sound is completely unique, you can here the style of bands such as The Smiths, Oasis and The Courteeners within their music.

Reflection -

In the past week i have decided upon the genre of my music video, uploaded a variety of possible song ideas, picked out the positives and negatives and rated them out of 10 in order to help me choose the ideal song for this project. After completing this, i managed to discover the ideal song, and have created a post stating why i did so. I have also uploaded a variety of images in the form of moodboards, to clearly portray what my chosen genre and ideas are. The moodboards feature images of artists and bands from the indie rock scene, as well as these bands/artists album covers. In the upcoming week, i hope to create a fictitious band and decide upon the members, carry out audience research, in order to discover who my target audience is, and decide upon my filming location.

The Song -

The song which will be featuring in my music video is 'When The Sun Goes Down' by indie Rock band The Arctic Monkeys.

I opted to choose this song for  a variety of different reasons. Firstly, I wanted to choose a track that I enjoy, as I feel I can connect more with the song and therefore make a better quality music video.

The second reason as to why I chose this song is because of its simplicity. Although it is a fantastic song, it is one which does not feature out of this world, extremely difficult guitar or drum solo’s and does not feature lyrics which are impossible to learn and sing along to. Both of these factors attracted me to this particular song, as when my band are being filmed, it must look as if they are actually playing the music. By choosing a song which is not too overly complicated, the final image should appear extremely professional and realistic, just how a real music video should.

The third reason as to why I chose this particular song is because of its uniqueness. In my opinion, this song is very distinctive and is unlike any other in this particular genre (indie rock) I am hoping that this uniqueness will travel with the song into the video itself, as I am hoping to create a video which is both entertaining, individual and complements the song.

The fourth reason as to why I chose this song is due to its time or length. This particular song is 3:25 seconds long, and so is the ideal time for the audience to listen to the song, as well as watch the music video. By choosing a song which is between 3 and 4 minutes, I am hoping to create a video which is memorable and sticks in the audience’s mind, I also want my video to be entertaining and to not bore the audience, which in my opinion, videos over 4 minutes long tend to do.

The fifth reason as to why i chose this song is due to the fact that members of my fictitious band can actually play this song. This factor is extremely important, as if my band members are playing exactly in time with the music, whilst playing the correct chords on the guitars etc. the overall appearance of my music video will look both realistic and professional.

Below is my chosen song -

Song Ideas -

I have opted to create shortlist of songs, in an attempt to find the perfect track for my music video. Due to the fact that my chosen genre is indie rock, i am hoping to find a song from this particular genre, and one which will match the image of my band. This has helped me narrow down my song choice to 7 songs, as i have opted to choose songs from only 3 bands. I have opted to choose these 3 particular bands, as i feel that my band members could be styled to look similar to the bands listed below.

Song idea 1 -

Positives -
There are a number of positives about this particular song. Firstly, the song is by indie rock band The Arctic Monkeys, a band which i am hoping to emulate whilst creating and styling my band. Secondly, this particular song has very interesting and entertaining lyrics which could be used to create a unique, interesting and entertaining video.

Negatives -
Although there are a number of positives to this song, there are also a number of negatives. Firstly, this particular song contains a large amount of guitar solos and loud drumming, this could well prove to be a problem, as members of my band are inexperienced in playing instruments, and so these solos may be too difficult for them to reproduce on camera, meaning that the overall look of the video will be unrealistic and unprofessional.

Rating -
7/10

Song idea 2 -

Positives -
There are a variety of positives within this particular song. Firstly, the song is by indie/alternative rock band Kasabian, a band which, similarly to the Arctic Monkeys, are a band which i am hoping to emulate whilst styling my band members. Another positive about this particular song is its simplicity. This song does not feature any out of this world guitar/drum solos and features fairly simplistic lyrics. Both of these factors could prove to be extremely important whilst filming the music video, as the simpler the song, the more realistic the final music video will look. The style of this song may also suit my band.

Negatives -
Whilst analysing this video i discovered a variety of negatives which feature in this song. Firstly, the song features particular sounds which may be difficult to recreate whilst filming the music video. The second negative is the age of the song.Although it is not yet classified as a 'classic' it is in fact a decade old, and so may not match the current style of my band. However, this factor could change, depending on whether the song does match the overall style of both the band and the music video.

Rating -
7/10

Song idea 3 -

Positives-
Whilst analysing this particular song i discovered a variety of positives. The first positive i noticed was the tempo of the music. This song contains a fast paced beat which i would use to add energy to my music video, this tempo may also match my bands style and overall performance on camera. The second positive i discovered was the lyrics which feature throughout. The lyrics used in this particular song are fairly simplistic and could work well in my music video (as the lead singer will need to be able to mime in time with the song, therefore the simpler the lyrics, the better the overall appearance will be.) Once again, this song is by indie/alternative rock band Kasabian, and so will match my bands appearance and musical style, as Kasabian are a band i am hoping to emulate whilst designing and styling my band.

Negatives -
Whilst analysing this song, i discovered a variety of negatives. Firstly, this song contains both drum and guitar solos, which could prove to be difficult whilst filming my band. The second negative is the songs length. Although it is not the longest song in the world, it is in fact over 4 minutes. Although this is not a huge problem, i may find it difficult to find enough footage to fill a 4 minutes and 17 second video.

Rating -
8.5/10

Song idea 4 -

Positives -
There are a number of positive features within this particular song. Firstly, the style of the song would match and suit my band, as The Arctic Monkeys are a band which i am hoping to emulate, both aesthetically and musically whilst styling my band. The second positive aspect of this particular song is the length. As this song is 3 minutes and 20 seconds, it is virtually the ideal time for a music video. In my opinion, a video and a song which is between 3 and 4 minutes is the perfect amount of time for the audience to both listen to and watch the action which is taking place on screen. The third aspect of this particular music is its simplicity. Although this song does feature both guitars and drums, it does not feature extremely difficult guitar/drum solos. This is a positive feature, as the simpler the song, the more realistic the final video will appear.

Negatives -
Whilst analysing this particular song, i did not manage to find a single negative factor, as this song appears to tick all of the right boxes. Having said that, i am not going to jump ahead and choose this song, as i feel as if i need time to weigh up my options, to ensure that i make the correct decision, seeing the bands style and setting will help me to do this.

Rating -
9/10

Song idea 5 -

Positives -
Whilst analysing this particular song i discovered a variety of positive features. Firstly, the style of the song will match both the appearance and musical style of my band, as (as mentioned before) The Arctic Monkeys are a band which i will attempt to emulate whilst designing and styling my band. The second positive feature is the pace of the song. Unlike 'Brick By Brick' this song contains a fast pace/tempo which i feel will add energy and interest to both the band and the video. The third positive feature i discovered whilst analysing this song is the fact that various members of my band, can in fact play this song. This feature is arguably the most important as the band will look extremely realistic in the final music video. The fourth positive aspect of this particular song is the simplicity of both the tune and the lyrics. As mentioned before, using a simplistic song allows the band members to appear more realistic on screen, allowing the visuals to appear extremely professional.

Negatives -
Whilst analysing this particular song, i found it extremely difficult to draw up a list of negatives, however, i did manage to find one. The only negative i discovered whilst analysing this song is the drumming. The drumming which features in this particular song is extremely fast, and may be too difficult for my drummer to keep up with. However, this particular negative aspect could become a positive one, as, if my drummer is able to keep up and the footage appears realistic, then this song may well be the ideal song choice for my music video.

Rating -
9/10

Song idea 6 -

Positives -
I discovered a variety of positive features whilst analysing this particular song. Firstly, this song is fast paced and has an upbeat tempo, which could match the video which i am hoping to create. The second factor relates to the simplicity of the lyrics. As mentioned before, the simplicity of a song can play a huge factor whilst creating a music video, as, if the lyrics/music is too over complicated, the performers on screen may look as if they are out of time, therefore leading to an unprofessional, unrealistic video. The third feature which caught my eye was the style of the song. This particular song is by indie/alternative rock band Beady Eye, a band who's style i may attempt to emulate whilst designing and creating my indie rock band.

Negatives -
Whilst analysing this particular song i once again struggled to find a large amount of negative features, however, i did manage to discover one. This negative feature is the length of the song. sa mentioned before, the length of the song can play a huge role when making a music video, as, the longer the song, the more footage you need, therefore the shorter the song, the less footage you need. In my opinion, it will be extremely difficult to try and fill a 5 minute gap, also, the audience may lose interest.

Rating -
8/10

Song idea 7 -

Positives -
After analysing this song, i discovered a variety of positive features. Firstly, the songs simplicity stood out to me. Not only is this song lyrically simple, but musically too. Although it does contain guitars, drums etc as well as guitar solos, it is not overly complicated and could be replicated by my band in my music video. Another positive factor which i discovered was the songs length, As mentioned before, i am looking to choose a song which is ideally between 3 and 4 minutes, as i believe that this is the perfect time limit for the audience to both watch and listen to the action which is taking place on screen. The third positive factor which i discovered is the songs style. As mentioned before, Beady Eye are a band who's style i wish to emulate, and so both the style and the song could go hand in hand, therefore creating a realistic appearing band who create music which matches their style/appearance.

Negatives -
Whilst analysing this particular song, i did not manage to find a single negative factor, as this song appears to tick all of the right boxes. Having said that, i am not going to jump ahead and choose this song, as i feel as if i need time to weigh up my options, to ensure that i make the correct decision, seeing the bands style and setting will help me to do this.

Inspirational Bands -

The Arctic Monkeys -

Below are a collection of images of Indie rock band The Arctic Monkeys. This particular band are a prime example of the type of image i am going to create for my fictitious band. Not only do i like this bands style of music, but their overall image and fashion choices. Whilst styling my band, i am hoping to emulate the appearance of the arctic monkeys, to make my band appear sharp, confident and professional, just like a real indie rock band should be. I will also attempt to emulate the band's confidence and stage presence whilst creating my fictitious band. I am hoping to create a front man with Alex Turner's arrogance, to ensure that my lead singer is eye catching and intriguing to watch on screen.

Kasabian -

Below are a collection of images of indie/alternative rock band Kasabian. Similarly to the arctic monkeys, Kasabian are a band who's style i like. Kasabian are an inspiration to my band, not just musically but aesthetically too. Whilst creating my fictitious band, i am hoping to emulate Kasabian's fashion and presence. I am hoping to emulate the confidence and stage presence of the likes of Tom Meighan and Sergio Pizzorno in order to make the members of my fictitious band extremely interesting and intriguing characters who are enjoyable to watch. By doing this i want  to ensure that my music video appears realistic and professional.

Beady Eye -

Below are a collection of images of Indie rock band Beady Eye.
Beady Eye are a huge inspiration to my fictitious band, due to their clothing, confidence and presence in the musical world. Whilst creating my fictitious band, i am hoping to emulate lead singer Liam Gallagher's confidence, and create a front man who is extremely confident, I am also hoping that my other band members, such as the guitarists and drummer, will posses a similar stage presence to the likes of Gem Archer and Andy Bell.
